Delhi CM Launches ‘Switch Delhi’ Campaign For Promoting Electric Vehicles
Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, launched the ‘Switch Delhi’ campaign on Thursday, February 4, 2021. This campaign aims to promote the use of electric vehicles instead of petrol or diesel ones. This change might positively affect pollution in the state and serve as a greener and pollution-free Delhi step.
Steps That the Delhi Government Will Undertake To Promote the Campaign
To popularize the ‘Switch Delhi’ campaign Kejriwal and his government is taking strategic steps. Kejriwal stated that, for the coming six weeks, his government would hire only electric cars. He has also approached various big companies, resident welfare associations (RWA), delivery chains, cinema halls, and malls to use electric vehicles. He has also asked them to set up charging stations within their premises.
The CM feels that it is time to put to use the Delhi Government’s electric vehicle policy, which is considered one of the world’s best. Thus he is reaching out to the youth and urging them to purchase an electric vehicle as their first vehicle.
The Delhi government has also planned for ample subsidies on electric vehicles’ purchase- both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Kejriwal will also omit road tax and registration charges on such cars. There are plans to build 100 charging stations across Delhi and has already issued tenders.
Result of the Switch Delhi Campaign
The Delhi government launched the electric vehicle policy in August 2020. Since then there has been a noticeable upsurge in the purchase of electric vehicles since then. More than 6,000 electric vehicles have already been bought. The government has also fixed 25% electric vehicles in the total number of vehicle booked in Delhi by 2024. Though this target is a highly ambitious one, we are yet to see the outcome.
